In light of recent LJ management stupidity, I'm thinking about switching over to dreamwidth, something I've really avoided doing. Besides being the proud owner of a place holder account, I know nothing about dreamwidth - how hard is it (is it possible?) to switch over entries. What is the general experience for dreamwidth users; do you prefer it over LJ?

Advice Pls. Thank you!

It's possible to import all your entries from LJ to DW, at the same privacy setting, with comments attached if you desire. It's possible to crosspost from DW to LJ, with or without a footer pointing to the crosspost and with or without a request (enforced by disabling comments at LJ) that people comment at DW. DW takes privacy concerns Very Seriously and I can confidently assure you that this fuckery will never happen at DW. Also on the list of things what will never happen at DW: advertising. Corollary: no fucking with users to please advertisers. Also there are a bunch of cool toys DW has that LJ doesn't: people whose posts you want to see on your reading page are not automatically people who have accessed to your locked entries and vice versa, cut tags are expandable and nestable, and that's just what I've thought of off the top of my head. You want a DW invite? I got lots.

I love dreamwidth. I find it easier to use - doing stuff like changing my user profile is just easier, the buttons are more obviously labled and in more obvious places, stuff like that - but completely intuitive for someone who's been using LJ for a while. It's very easy to crosspost your entries - you can do it entry-by-entry with a button on the entry screen, or just change your settings so that it automatically crossposts. If you edit your DW entry, it also edits your LJ entry automatically, and if your filters are identical, it'll put the same filters on, or private-lock if they're not. And you can also very easily do the thing where you switch off comments on LJ and have a little link to the comments on DW, like I have on my LJ. Honestly, it's really great.

I like DW! It feels friendlier, maybe because it is smaller? Anyway, I would love to see more activity over there.

Let me know if you end up using DW. I prefer LJ, but man what is up with it lately!

I switched over completely and I love it. There are always new features and fixes coming out, but ones I want and like, not like the pervasive overhauls and strange features LJ (still) does. There are also a whole bunch of communities to help people migrate and get to know features, and everyone is super helpful.
